Three Ewes

Sheep are underrated subjects. People tend to overlook them in favour of more obviously dramatic wildlife, but I find them endlessly interesting to paint — the way they cluster together, the individuality of each face, the particular quality of their wool in different lights. These three ewes were painted from life, and what struck me most was the way they held their ground, regarding me with a calm, slightly sceptical curiosity that I found entirely charming.

The painting is part of my ongoing series of British countryside subjects — animals that are woven into the fabric of the landscape, so familiar that we sometimes forget to really look at them. I wanted to paint these three in a way that asked you to look properly: at the texture of the fleece, the warmth in their eyes, the quiet companionship of animals that spend their lives in each other’s company.

The Print

Three Ewes is a limited edition fine art print, reproduced from my original watercolour painting. Each print is produced on 315gsm acid-free archival quality watercolour paper, chosen for its exceptional longevity and its ability to hold the subtle washes and fine detail of the original work.

This is a signed edition of 250. Your print is hand-signed on the front and comes complete with a signed certificate of provenance.

Sizes & Presentation

Available in A4, A3, A2, and A1. Each print is supplied in a sealed cellophane wrapper. Please note: A2 prints are sent rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube for maximum protection.

All prints are supplied unmounted and unframed. The soft, natural palette of this piece suits a white or warm cream mount in a simple white-painted or natural wood frame — a classic combination that works well in both contemporary and traditional interiors.
