Highland Cows

Few subjects stop me in my tracks quite like a Highland cow. There is something wonderfully unhurried about them — that great fringe of russet hair, the wide, calm eyes, the sense that they have been standing in this particular field since long before you arrived and will be there long after you leave. I painted this piece after a visit to the Scottish Highlands, where the light in autumn has a quality unlike anywhere else: warm and low, turning the landscape amber and gold.

I wanted to capture that quality of stillness — the cows as part of the land rather than simply on it. Working in watercolour, I built up the texture of their coats in layers, letting the paper show through in places to suggest the rough, windswept quality of the hair. The background is kept deliberately loose, so the eye is drawn to the animals themselves.

The Print

Highland Cows is a contemporary limited edition fine art print, reproduced from my original watercolour painting. Each print is produced on 315gsm acid-free archival quality watercolour paper, chosen for its exceptional longevity and its ability to hold the subtle washes and fine detail of the original work.

This is a signed edition of 250. Your print is hand-signed on the front and comes complete with a signed certificate of provenance.

Sizes & Presentation

Available in A4, A3, A2, and A1. Each print is supplied in a sealed cellophane wrapper. Please note: A2 prints are sent rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube for maximum protection.

All prints are supplied unmounted and unframed. The warm amber and russet tones of this piece suit a natural oak or dark walnut frame particularly well, with a deep cream or warm white mount to complement the earthy palette.
